STEELWORKERS ENDORSE ABBY FINKENAUER IN IOWA’S FIRST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

Union hails Finkenauer’s working-class roots, agenda for higher wages and more good-paying jobs

Dubuque, IA – Today, the United Steelworkers District 11 endorsed Abby Finkenauer for Congress in Iowa’s First Congressional District. More than 5,700 hardworking Iowans are represented by USW District 11.

“Steelworkers are tough, and they know a fighter when they see one,” said Mark Cook, Business Agent at United Steelworkers Local 1861. “I’ve known Abby for many years. She understands that workers are the foundation of a strong economy. That’s because Abby grew up in a union home – she’s seen first hand the importance of higher wages, better benefits, and stronger worker protections. Abby fought for us in Des Moines, and now she’s going to fight for us in Washington. We’re proud to have her back during this campaign.”

“I’m proud to stand with the 5,700 hardworking men and women of USW District 11,” said Finkenauer. “Iowans deserve better than politicians who would rather storm out of a room – like Congressman Rod Blum – than answer straightforward questions. They need leaders who will put money into the pockets of American workers, not Chinese steel companies. I’m committed to being that advocate for Iowans and fighting for working families’ bottom line, whether that means creating good paying jobs, supporting skills and training programs, or securing better wages and benefits.”

The endorsement positions Finkenauer as Labor’s choice in the IA-01 race, and adds to a long list of support from major labor groups and progressive organizations, including the Iowa Teamsters, AFSCME Council 61, Dubuque Building and Construction Trades, Ironworkers Local 89, Plumbers and Pipefitters of East Central Iowa Local 125, LIUNA Local 43, SMART Local 91, EMILY’s List, NARAL and over twenty elected officials and activists.
